1850-1853: Represented his county in the House of Delegates

1859: Commanded Virginia Military during John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry

1861: Colonel in CSA

4 March 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General

1862: Participated in Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign

8 May 1862: Battle of McDowell

25 May 1862: 1st Battle of Winchester

9 June 1862: Battle of Port Republic

​9 August 1862: Battle of Cedar Mountain - took command after Gen. Winder mortally wounded

28 August 1862: Battle of Groveton, was wounded

Sent to Charleston

18 July 1863 Defended Fort Wagner and stayed on James Island

1 January 1865: Promoted to Major General

19 March 1865: Battle of Bentonville - Surrendered with Gen. Johnston

2 May 1865: Paroled at Greensboro as a Major General. (There is no record of his promotion and still signed his signature as Brigadier General

1874-1879: Served in state legislature

1891-1897: Judge in Clousester County Court
