Enlisted as a private, but South Carolina governor insisted Hampton accept a Colonel's commission

Organized  and partially funded the unit known as Hampton's Legion which consisted of 6 companies of infantry, four companies of cavalry and one battery of artillery

July 21, 1861: 1st Battle of Bull Run

April 5- May 4, 1862: Siege of Yorktown

May 23, 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General

May 31, 1862: Battle of Seven Pines - Injured in the foot, but stayed in the saddle while the foot was treated and returned to duty

After the Peninsula Campaign, Gen. Lee reorganized his Cavalry forces under J.E.B. Stuart. Stuart selected Hampton as a senior subordinate and command of one of two brigades

October 1862: Chambersburg (PA) Raid

June 9, 1863: Battle of Brandy Station - was slightly wounded

Rode with Maj. Gen. Stuart around the Union army arriving at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863
