1854: Joined the newly formed Republican Party

June 7, 1861: Governor Morton names him colonel of 14th Indiana Infantry

September 12-13, 1861: Battle of Cheat Mountain

March 23, 1862: Battle of Kernstown - Second day of fighting assumed command for a wounded Brig. Gen. James Shields

Gave Stonewall Jackson one of his only defeats during the war

April 5 - May 4, 1862: Siege of Yorktown

July 1862:; Led his regiment, 8th Ohio Infantry and 7th West Virginia Infantry. Absorbed the 4th Ohio Infantry and was stationed at Fort Monroe

September 1, 1862: Covered Gen. Pope's retreat from the 2nd Battle of Bull Run

Maryland Campaign: Command First Brigade of French's Third Division in the II Corps

September 17th, 1862: Battle of Antietam - Fought a series of assaults on the Sunken Road - Kimball's Brigade earned the nickname of Gibraltar Brigade

​December 11-15, 1862: Battle of Fredricksburg -

Suffered painful thigh wound, which put him our of action till late Spring 1863

After his recovery, his was on of three divisions ordered to Mississippi to join the Siege on Vicksburg, but arrived too late to see any action

September 1863: Greater part of Kimball's division was ordered to Arkansas and became incorporated in the VII Corps

March 23 - May 3, 1864: Camden Expedition

April 1864: Relieved of duty in Department of Arkansas and ordered to report to Gen. Sherman and given command of the IV Corps

July 1864: Battle of Peachtree Creek

Called back to Indiana to help subdue the Knights of the Golden Circle

Late Fall 1864: Returned to active duty as Division Commander

November 30. 1864: Battle of Franklin

December 15-16, 1864: Battle of Nashville

February 1, 1865: Brevet Major General

August 24, 1865: Mustered out of the Army

1867: Elected as State Treasurer

1873: Won election to Indiana House of Representatives

1873: Pres Grant appoints him as Surveyors General in Utah Territory, a post he held until 1878

1879: Pres. Hayes appoints him as Postmaster of Ogden, Utah until his death
