1853-1854: Illinois House of Representative

1858-1860: Democrat in U.S. House of Representative

July 21, 1861: Battle of Bull Run - Fought as unattached volunteer in Michigan regiment

April 2, 1862: Resigned his Congressional seat

Entered Union Army as Colonel in the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment

November 7, 1861: Battle of Belmont - Horse was shot out from under him

February 15, 1862: Battle of Fort Donelson - was wounded

March 21, 1862: Promoted to Brigadier General in Volunteers

April 29 - May 30, 1862: Commanded a Brigade and then 1st Division of the Army of the Tennessee

Spring 1863: Promoted to Major General effective November 29, 1862

Vicksburg Campaign

May 1, 1863: Battle of Port Gibson

May 12, 1863: Battle of Raymond

May 16, 1863: Battle of Champion Hill

Served as city's military governor after the fall of Vicksburg

Succeeded Gen. Sherman as commander of XV Corps

July 22, 1864: Battle of Atlanta

Assumed command of the Army of Tennessee after Maj. Gen. McPherson was killed

Logan was disappointed when Maj. Gen. Howard was given permanent command of the Army of the Tennessee

Sherman arranged for Logan to lead the army during the May 1865 Grand Review in Washington
