Maj. Gen. George W. Deitzler

1855: Traveled to Boston to see Amos Lawerence and others about the free-state cause. Received 100 rifles marked books. was the aide-de-camp and even full time commander in the Wakarusa War

A few months later, Deitzler and several other free state leaders were charged with treason. Immediately arrested and kept in prison tents for about four months. Charges were later dismissed as the state didn't wish to pursue the charges

Elected Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives

Member of Kansas Senate under the Topeka Constitution

Raised the 1st Kansas Infantry and appointed Colonel

August 10, 1861: Battle of Wilson's Creek - Commanded the 1st Brigade - was wounded during the battle

April 4, 1863: Appointed Brigadier General with rank of November 29, 1862

October 1862 - July 1863: Vicksburg Campaign - After the fall of Vicksburg and unable to tranfer to a better climate, resigned his commission on August 12, 1863. This allowed him to return to Kansas.

Back in Kansas, Received a commission as Major General of Kansas Volunteers

Commanded 10,000 Kansas State Militia in Army of the Border during Price's Missouri Expedition

His troops did not want to fight in Missouri, so it wasn't until the Battle of Westport on October 23, 1864, his troops were outnumbered 2 to 1.

After the war, promoted railroads

Died in Tucson, Arizona from injuries falling from a buggy.
