April 1861: Tendered his services to Virginia Governor and is appointed a Colonel in the Volunteer service

May 16, 1861: Reports to Lynchburg, Virginia to organize the volunteers

July 18, 1861: Battle at Blackburn's Ford

July 21, 1861: 1st Battle of Manassas

July 21, 1861: Promoted to Brigadier General

October 22, 1861 - May 5, 1862: Command brigade, Van Dorn's - DH Hill's Division

May 4-5, 1862: Battle of Williamsburg - During the battle, is wounded by a minie ball in the shoulder

June 28, 1862: Reported back to duty at General Lee's headquarters near Chickahominy

July 1 - September, 1862: Commanding Eizey's Brigade, Ewell's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia

July 1, 1862: Battle of Malvern Hill

August 9, 1862: Battle of Cedar Run

August 28, 1862: Battle of Groveton

August 29-30, 1862: 2nd Battle of Manassas

September 1, 1862: Battle of Chantilly

September 17, 1862 - November 1863: Commanding Division

September 17, 1862: Battle of Antietam

December 4-5, 1863: Commanding Division

July 2, 1863: Assaulted East Cemetery Hill and despite initial success were repulsed by arriving Union reinforcements

July 3, 1863: Unsuccessful assault on Culp's Hill

July 4-5, 1863: Protected General Lee's rear as he retreated from Gettysburg

April 1865: After the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, Early fled to Mexico. Later, he traveled to Cuba and then Toronto, Canada

1868: Pardoned by President Andrew Johnson

1869: Returned to Virginia to practice law
